MADHAB MALANCHI KAINYA
A Play Based on Maimansing Geetika
SUNDAY, AUGUST 28, 2023 | RED CLAY AUDITORIUM

For about a couple of hundred years, Bengal enjoyed relative peace and stability. From the lands of Sylhet and Mymensingh (in present-day Bangladesh bordering Meghalaya), in the 1500s comes the delightful musical Madhab Malanchi Koinyya - named after the two young protagonists. Hopelessly and madly in love, the lovers and their adventures hark back to the love of Krishna and Radha, but the storyline is uniquely Bengali. The story flows through the jungles and rivers of Bengal, where religions co-exist peacefully, and the rajas and their ujirs manage royal duties but are focused on how to find suitable matches for the princesses. Replete with fairy tale characters like Rakkhoshes and Byangomis, as well as the fears and uncertainties of daily life, all happy events are celebrated lustily. At the same time, sad moments are dealt with with hope and fortitude.
The singers sing the dancers dance, and the actors take us on a raucous journey shaped by fate, happenstance, and serendipity.
Initially staged in Calcutta in the late 1980s and successfully running for over 700 live shows, we are indebted to Shri Bibhash Chakraborty and Smt Suranjana Dasgupta for trusting and guiding us in our efforts.
